  10.      Maddog Williams is an Interactive Animated Adventure Game (TM)
  11. created by Game Crafters, an Orem Utah based software house.
  12.  
  13.      This Demo is only a small part of the entire game.  The full
  14. game is over 120 scenes (8 Chapters on 5, 3.5" or 9, 5.25" Disks).
  15. This demo and the game are Hard Drive installable.
  16.  
  17.      To put the Demo on your HD just copy all the files into a
  18. directory and type MADDOG from that directory at to DOS prompt to
  19. run the game.
  20.  
  21.      To run it from a 720k, 1.44M 3.5" or 1.2M 5.25" disk, copy all
  22. the files to the disk, switch to that drive and type MADDOG at the
  23. DOS prompt.
  24.  
  25.      To run it from 360K 5.25" disks, you will need 2 (TWO), 5.25"
  26. 360K floppies.  Label one disk Introduction and the other Chapter
  27. 1.  Copy all of the files **** EXCEPT  CHAPTER.1 **** to the disk
  28. labeled Introduction.  Copy the file CHAPTER.1 to the disk labeled
  29. Chapter 1.
  30.      Insert the Introduction Disk into the drive and type MADDOG at
  31. the DOS prompt.  You will be prompted as you play the game to
  32. switch disks as needed.
  33.  
  34.                          GETTING STARTED
  35.  
  36.      At first you will see the menu:
  37.  
  38.      Please Select Difficulty Level.
  39.      1. Easy
  40.      2. Hard
  41.      3. Pray For Deliverance
  42.      Selection:
  43.  
  44.      If you select EASY, the enemies you encounter will be easier
  45. to defeat, and some of the puzzles have more than one solution.
  46. HARD makes the enemies a little more difficult to defeat and some
  47. of the puzzles change.  PRAY FOR DELIVERANCE makes the enemies
  48. Nasty! but doesn't affect the puzzles.

  50.      Next you will see the prompt Change Options? (Y/N).  If you
  51. select Yes then you will be asked what type of musical device you
  52. have.  If you answer no to this question the default device is the
  53. Computer Speaker.  After you select the musical device you can
  54. answer No to this question the next time you play and it will
  55. remember your selection. (If the game locks up right after this and
  56. you don't have a sound card, try again and make sure you select
  57. Computer Speaker.)

  59.                          THE GAME BEGINS
  60.  
  61.       After the credits you will be greeted by the Guardian of
  62. Marinor.  He will ask you "Is this your first time playing the
  63. game? (Y) or (N)."  If you answer No the game will begin
  64. immediately.  If you answer Yes you will see the introduction
  65. sequence.  We suggest you watch the introduction at least once,  it
  66. has information about the events leading up to the time the game
  67. begins.
  68.  
  69.                             GAME PLAY
  70.  
  71.      After Maddog wakes up (Yes, adventurers always sleep on top of
  72. the covers fully clothed!) you will be in control of him.  To move
  73. him around the screen you can use the arrow keys, the number pad or
  74. a joystick.  To switch between KEYBOARD and JOYSTICK mode press
  75. CTRL J.  An icon at the top of the screen will change between the
  76. picture of a joystick and a key so you will know what mode you are
  77. in.  The number pad allows 8 direction control of Maddog.
  78.      To use the keyboard press the direction you wish to travel and
  79. RELEASE the key.  Maddog will travel in that direction until you
  80. press the same key again, or you press 5 on the keypad.  If you
  81. press a different key Maddog will change directions.  If you hold
  82. the key down, Maddog will walk rather spastically.
  83.  
  84.      As you type in commands at the prompt and press enter a
  85. response to what you typed will appear on the screen.  You must
  86. press enter to get rid of it!.  Any other key will result in a
  87. beep.  We do this so you won't miss any important texts that come
  88. up automatically.

  90.      During the game you will encounter enemies.  You must use
  91. skill in fighting to defeat them.  To enter fight mode you must
  92. first have a weapon, then press F1.  If an enemy is present, (You
  93. can tell because there will be a second Health-O-Meter at the top
  94. of the screen just below Maddogs. If Maddogs health becomes blank
  95. he dies, the same is true for enemies.)  Maddog will draw his sword
  96. and prepare to fight.  If no enemy is present you will be ask if
  97. you want to practice.  This allows you to practice fighting with
  98. your current weapon.  To exit practice/fight mode press F1 again.
  99.  
  100.                             FIGHTING
  101. KEYBOARD:
  102.  
  103.      SHIFT acts like the joystick button.
  104.  
  105.      LEFT & RIGHT arrows move Maddog Left and Right.
  106.  
  107.      UP arrow is like pressing up on the joystick.  If you press
  108. SHIFT, Maddog will attack high.
  109.  
  110.      DOWN arrow is like pressing done on the joystick.  If you
  111. press SHIFT, Maddog will attack low.  This also causes maddog to
  112. block the enemies attack.  AFTER MADDOG BLOCKS HE RETURNS TO
  113. NEUTRAL.  You must pres the down arrow key again to block.
  114.  
  115.      Key pad 5 is neutral, (Pressing the same direction twice will
  116. return Maddog to neutral also.)  If you press SHIFT, Maddog will
  117. attack middle.
  118.  
  119.      If you swing while Maddog is moving backwards, HE WILL TURN
  120. AROUND! This can be a very bad thing, the enemy will attack
  121. mercilessly.
  122.  
  123.      Practice the moves in practice mode to get a feel for how it
  124. works.
  125.                       A SHORT WALK THROUGH
  126.  
  127.      After Maddog is standing, type LOOK (This will give a
  128. description of the surroundings.)
  129.  
  130.      Type LOOK RUG (Maddog will describe the rug.)
  131.  
  132.      Type LOOK UNDER RUG (Maddog will walk to the rug and look
  133. under it.)
  134.  
  135.      Walk Maddog to in front of the shelves. Type LOOK SHELVES.
  136.  
  137.      Type TAKE SWORD (Maddog will pick up his sword)
  138.  
  139.      Press F1, and practice with the sword a bit.
  140.  
  141.      Press F1 to exit practice mode.
  142.  
  143.                      A FEW FINAL SUGGESTIONS
  144.  
  145.      When you first enter a scene, type LOOK to get a description
  146. of your surroundings.
  147.  
  148.      LOOK at everything imaginable.  Sometimes important clues are in
  149. the text.
  150.  
  151.      If you meet someone, try to interact with them in some way.
  152. TALK TO MAN is always a good way to start! (Unless its not a man!)
  153.  
  154.      Fighting to some may seem hard at first, but hang in there
  155. you'll get used to it!
  156.  
  157.      Since this is a demo version, you will not be able to save
  158. your game. (Bummer eh?)

  175.           around.  Attacks when fighting.)
